College Rajnandgaon, PIN- 491441 Sponsored By University Grants Commission, Regional Office, Bhopal THE SEMINAR AND ITS THEME The focal theme of the seminar was to discuss about the mathematical development through the ages. The sub themes were –Oriental Mathematics (Indian, Egyptian, Chinese, Babylonian etc), Classical mathematics, Medieval Mathematics, Modern Mathematics, Pure mathematics, and also present newer areas of applications of Mathematics in Industries, Engineering, Physics, Biological, Social, and Medical Sciences, Astronomy, Agriculture, Defense, Computer Science and Information Technology etc. There was also a session for panel discussion on History of Mathematics as a part of curriculum in Indian universities. The programme included the felicitation of eminent scientists, encouragement of young scientists, Professor J.N. Kapoor Memorial Lecture, Preliminary Lecture, invited talks and paper reading sessions. CONFERENCE SUMMARY REPORT
Welcoming the delegates Principal Dr. R. N. Singh said that “India has a long and rich tradition of Mathematics and its applications in the society. Economics, Medical Science, social science are nothing without the knowledge of Mathematics in 21st century. Organizing Secretary and Head of Mathematics Department Dr. Omkar Lal Srivastava welcomed the guests and talked about “Mathematics and its Development” with the emphasis on the subject matter in brief. The program included the felicitation of eminent scientists, encouragement of young researchers, Presidential Address (General, Presidential Address (Technical), Professor J.N. Kanpur Memorial Lecture, Plenary Lectures, invited talks and paper reading sessions. In a brief and rousing address, the Vice Chancellor of Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University Raipur Prof. S. K. Pandey spoke on the importance of seminar and conference and their contributions to the development of humanity and the creation of scientific temper and knowledge- based society.”Happy to be inaugurating the 17th Annual conference of the Vijñāna Parishad of India and National Seminar on “Mathematics Through Ages” underlined the twin role of cultural and scientific interaction between scholars and senior scientists. He was happy to know that more than hundred PG students and scholars were participating in the events. Prof. S. L. Singh, the President of the Vijñāna Parishad of India said “We have organized many conferences in big cities but this is a unique feature of this conference as it is organized by a college of small city Rajnandgaon and vast presence of young students from all over India is the main achievement of this conference and seminar because they are the future mathematicians of our country. In this program, we are also celebrating the International Mathematics year 2013 for mother planet earth and 900th birth anniversary of famous mathematician and astronomer. Special guest of function and the (then) President of the Indian Mathematical Society Prof. Geetha S. Rao said that “India is a young country. Every third person in India is youth. Therefore it is imperative to give them the right education and especially the education of mathematics. Only the right kind of books and research Journals can help them to face the growing challenges that come with the changing world”, She added, and wished all the participants a great success in their efforts to choose mathematics as career. Another special guest Prof. Gokulanand Das, Ex. Vice Chancellor of Utkal University said “I am here to celebrate mathematical literature and to interchange my ideas with young scholars.”. Prof. Hansraj Joshi, York University, Canada addressed this occasion and established the kinship of mathematics in Ram Charita-manas of Tulasidas. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Ramji Bharti, President of the governing body of Digvijay College expressed his happiness in associating with this program in bringing this conference and seminar to mathematics lovers across the country. Professor R.C.Singh Chandel, Secretary, Vijnana Parishad of India said that the Vijñāna Parishad of India an international society dedicated to the applications of Mathematics in all fields of Sciences and Technology and as such it has a crucial role to play because it is the only society in India explicitly devoted to this goal. It is different from other societies in the sense that other societies are formed first then start their publications. Here journal Jnanabha was started first and society was formed later. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDFollowing Scientists were honored by the “Distinguished Service Award” for their outstanding contribution to their subject and/or to their distinguished services rendered to the Vijnana Parishad of India or to the Nation:
“Professor J.N. Kapur Memorial Lecture” was delivered by Professor Arun M. Vaidya, Gujrat University on “Some Elementary Traffic Models”. After the key note address of Prof. S. L. Singh and Professor K. Ramasubramaian in the plenary session, nine technical sessions of 91 contributory papers were presented in e-Classroom, SMART Classroom and Padumlal Punnalal hall simultaneously in two days as scheduled. Mathematical evening of cultural programs by the students of postgraduate department of mathematics, compered and directed by the famous alumni of our department Shri Yogesh Agrawal, was organised in the evening of the inaugural day. INVITED TALKS Total 21 Invited talks were delivered in two days in different conference halls on different topics of mathematics. He also presented certificates and mementos to contributors and participants. He congratulated the three best paper awardees and hoped that this will encourage other young researchers in mathematics. He congratulated the principal, organizing committee and students for organizing such a program in Mathematics in this state. He said that the conference and seminar were very successful as it attracted famous mathematicians not only from India but also from other countries. This program occupies an important place in the development of knowledge in Mathematical sciences and its applications in different fields of science and technology. Researchers and students must have benefitted from the discussions and deliberations held during the event. Prof. S. L. Singh Ex. UGC Emeritus Fellow said that earlier he was worried about organizing such a large event by the department of a college of a small town, but the program was very successful in every aspect like quality of research papers, participation of renowned professors of world class, researchers and students, hospitality etc. Shri Suresh H. Lal the chairperson of the function said that it is difficult to imagine the modern day progress without taking into account the contribution of Mathematics the world over. He congratulated the organizers for organizing this type of conference for the first time in the long history of this college which attracted mathematicians of many states and cities of India like Manipur, Shilong, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Bhopal, Kanpur, etc. President of the Governing Body of the college said that every effort was done to make the stay of participants comfortable and enjoyable in Rajnandgaon. Principal Academic Advisor of the conference, Prof. R. C. S. Chandel presented the report of different sessions of the seminar and conference. Dr. C. S. Prasad of Kanpur, Prof. D. N. Garain of Dumka also shared their views and praised for arrangements made for the seminar. Organizing Secretary Omkar Lal Shrivastava informed that 198 Academicians and participants attended the seminar. ABOUT DIGVIJAY COLLEGE
AND DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS Digvijay college is one of the leading colleges of Chhattisgarh.It was founded in 1957 by Nandgaon Shikshan Samiti with the help of famous king Raja Digvijay Das of Rajnandgaon. Hindi Laureates-Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi served here. Triveni Parisar and Srijan Samvad are two famous centers of Hindi Literature has been established by Chhattisgarh Government in our premises. There are 20 departments in our college. Mathematics department is one of the important departments in the college. It came into existence in the year 1959 when the U.G course was started. At present both UG and PG courses (which were started in the year 1970) are being run successfully. UGC has identified the Department of Mathematics as highly rated department under the scheme of college with potential for excellence. LOCATION OF RAJNANDGAON The District Rajnandgaon came into existence on 26th Jan' 1973, by way of division of District Durg. Rajnandgaon city is the western gateway of Chhattisgarh. The District headquarter Rajnandgaon is on the Mumbai - Howrah line of South-Eastern railways. Direct trains from Jammu, New Delhi, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneswar, Ahmadabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune to Rajnandgaon are available from different routes. The National Highway 6 (Great Eastern Road) also passes through the town of Rajnandgaon. The nearest airport to the District is Swami Vivekananda Terminal, Mana, Raipur, about 80 kms away.
