Conference Report
International Conference and 22nd Annual Convention of Vijñāna Parishad of India on Advances in Operations Research, Statistics, and Mathematics (AOSM 2019) was held during 28th-30th December 2019. This three-day conference was organized on the premises of the Department of Mathematics, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, in association with Vijñāna Parishad of India. The conference was partially sponsored by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), India and Science Education and Research Board (SERB), India. The conference is blessed with letter of best wishes from Hon’ble Minister of MHRD, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ Ji, Chairman, UGC, Prof. D.P. Singh, Director General, CSIR, Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, Prof. Souvik Bhattacharyya, and Ex-Director, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, Prof. A.K. Sarkar.
The conference aimed to provide a common platform for academicians and researchers to showcase their work and to promote interdisciplinary research. Experts in the field of Computer Science, Fundamental Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Geology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Industrial & Manufacturing Technology, Nanotechnology, and Transportation but not limited, enlightened the audience with recent developments in their domain.
Day 1: 28 December 2019 (Saturday)
The conference was inaugurated with the lamp lighting ceremony of Maa Saraswati. The inaugural function was attended by Chief Guest Prof. Avanish Kumar, Chairman, CSTT, Guest of Honour Hon'ble Prof Souvik Bhattacharyya, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, Prof. Madhu Jain, President, VPI, Dr. R.C.S. Chandel, Secretary, VPI; with other eminent dignitaries as Prof. Kou-En Ching, Taiwan, Prof. G.C. Sharma, India Prof. S.R. Chakravarthy, USA, Prof. Dashrath Singh, USA, Prof. Kailash Patidar, South Africa, etc.
Prof. Souvik Bhattacharyya, the Vice-Chancellor, began the inaugural function at 09.30 a.m. on 28th December 2019 by welcoming all the participants and guests. He highlighted the history and achievement of BITS and appreciated the Department of Mathematics for organizing the conference. After that, Prof. Rakhee, convenor of the conference, highlighted the theme of the conference. Prof. B.K. Sharma, Head Department of Mathematics, briefed about the research activities of the department. Founder Secretary of VPI Prof. R. C. Singh Chandel and Prof. Madhu Jain, VPI President, enlightened the audience about the aims and activities of VPI. The Hon’ble Chief Guest Prof. Avanish Kumar, Chairman, CSTT, Delhi, considered as a doyen in his field of specialization in OR, very nicely explained the fact that how every discipline is incomplete without mathematics and it is straightforward to understand it without any fear. The souvenir of the conference and research journal “Jhanabha” of VPI were released in the inaugural function. The inaugural session was concluded by Prof. Chandra Shekhar, Organizing Secretary, AOSM 2019, who gave the vote of thanks and expressed his gratitude towards everyone for being part of the grand intellectual gathering.
The inaugural session was followed by the presidential and keynote address of Prof. Madhu Jain on “Stochastic Modeling for Reliability Prediction of Software System with Imperfect Debugging”. After the Keynote address, there were two more Keynote addresses: Prof. Kou-En Ching, Taiwan, on “Fault Slip Deficit Rate Derived from Geodetic Data for Seismic Hazard Assessment” and Prof. G.C. Sharma, Agra, India, on “Maintainability and Performance Modeling of GIx/Gy/R Machining System with Balking: A Diffusion Approximation Approach”.
After lunch, the first speaker of the plenary talk session was Prof. S.R. Chakravarthy, USA, who enlightened participants on “A Comparative Study of Vacations Models Under Various Vacation Policies-Simulation Approach”. The other two speakers were Prof. Dashrath Singh, USA who delivered a talk on “A Comprehensive Theory of Compatibility Relation and Applications” and Prof. Kailash Patidar, South Africa who gave a talk on “Robust Multirate Collocation Methods for Singularly Perturbed Eco-Evolutionary Models”. The next three parallel session were technical sessions, where 4 invited talks and 10 contributory papers were presented on different topics: Queueing Theory, Operations Research, Fluid Dynamics, Soft Computing Techniques etc. where these sessions were chaired by Prof. Madhu Jain, Prof. G.C. Sharma and Prof. D.S. Hooda.
Day 2: 29 December 2019 (Sunday)
On the second day of the conference, the morning session was started with the three technical sessions in parallel. Each session had one invited talk, and a total of 9 contributory papers on the topic-Numerical analysis, Operations research, Machine learning, Supply chain and Inventory were presented.
After a tea break of 15 minutes, Prof. Rama Bhargava, Department of Mathematics, IIT Roorkee, gave “PROFESSOR J.N. KAPUR MEMORIAL LECTURE” on “Computational Methods with Special Reference to MESHFREE Methods: Why and How”.
In the felicitation function, following Scientists were honored by the “Distinguished Service Award” for their outstanding contribution to their subject and their distinguished services rendered to the VPI or the Nation:

Following this, there were two Plenary talks by Prof. Avanish Kumar and Prof. V. K. Sehgal.
The next special session was devoted to YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD for Best Paper Presentation where total 12 young researchers and students competed in three categories-Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary Mathematics from different places including Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, Manipal University Jaipur, Rajasthan, Integral University, Lucknow and BITS Pilani, Rajasthan.
Day 3: 30 December 2019 (Monday)
The morning session began with two technical parallel sessions chaired by Prof. Rakhee and Prof. K.S. Sangwan, wherein a total of 11 oral paper presentations were held besides invited talks of Prof. Pavai Madheswari, S and Prof. R.C.S. Chandel. After a tea break of 15 minutes, there were last two parallel sessions in which eminent speaker Prof. S.C. Malik and Prof. Hemant delivered invited talk, and a total of 7 paper presentations were presented.
After lunch, the valedictory function was held at 2:30 PM in the NAB auditorium. Prof. Chandra Shekhar, Chancellor, ACSIR University, was the Chief Guest of the function. Prof. B.K. Sharma welcomed all the delegates in the valedictory function again. Dr. Sumanta Pasari, Co-convener, presented the report of different sessions of the conference. Seventy, participants did the registrations for AOSM 2019. There were in total 3 Keynote addresses, 11 invited talks, and 5 plenaries were organized, and 50 scientific papers were presented on different topics related to the theme of the conference.
In the valedictory function, Prof. R.C.S. Chandel, Secretary, VPI, announced the name of the awardees of YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDS. Prof. Chandra Shekhar presented the award to winners. Following are the names of the winner
